Subjects or topics related to the treatment of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region. Often includes information about tooth extractions, facial surgeries, including cleft surgery, cranio-maxillofacial trauma.  

Topics may include:

  • Exodontia
    Topics related to uncomplicated and surgical extractions up to full bony extractions.  May include both primary and permanent dentition.
  • Other dentoalveolar surgery
    Education regarding procedures such as socket preservation, ridge augmentation, removal of hyperplastic tissue, vestibuloplasty, alveoplasty, removal of exostosis, (oroantral fistula closure with primary closure/membrane; frenectomy, removal of soft tissue lesions, removal of cysts; osseous regeneration, flap design and suturing techniques.
  • Diagnosis and management of dental infections
    Topics could include Incision/Drainage, pericoronitis treatment, post op management; management of cutaneous abscesses. Debridement, management of osteonecrosis, osteoradionecrosis, osteomyelitis, hyperbaric chambers
  • Diagnosis and management of dental trauma
    Education regarding re-implantation of avulsed teeth with splinting, alveolar stabilization with plating or interdental wiring/closed reduction.
  • Orthognathic and TMJ surgery
    Education related to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that are related to these surgeries.  i.e.: bilateral sagittal splits, LeForte, open joint surgery, arthroscopic TM Joint surgery etc.
  • Advanced surgical procedures
    Additional surgical techniques including but not limited to implant dentistry, zygomatic implants, repositioning/reconstruction of facial anatomy, cancer surgery and reconstruction
  • Biopsies
    Education in the variety of biopsy techniques, incisional and excisional biopsy and brush biopsy.  Also, diagnostic tools to better identify potential lesions.  i.e.: ViziLite, VELscope etc.
  • Emerging concepts, techniques, therapies and technology
    New technology/procedures used in any aspect of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • Product/technology training
    Training on proper use of specific products/instruments developed to aid oral and maxillofacial surgery. Product training courses should be directed to current users or a product and focus on proper/safe use.  Courses cannot contain any marketing information intended to encourage participants to purchase the product.
