Information related to the human body and how it functions; educational topics intended to provide foundational knowledge that is then applied to dentistry. 

Topics may include:

  • Cariology
    The study of caries, its formation and progression. Dental caries is a cavity formation in teeth caused by bacteria that attach to teeth and form acids in the presence of sucrose, other sugars, and refined starches; tooth decay.
  • Anatomy
    The science of the structure of the body or organisms.  Dissection courses would count in this category
  • Microbiology
    The study of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses and other microscopic organisms
  • Dental materials
    The study of dental materials themselves, uses, properties, structure, chemistry etc. of the materials.  Not to include the procedures done to utilize the materials.

    Some keywords used in course titles or descriptions: Resin composites, Amalgam, Bonding, Porcelain, Articulators, Composites, Biomaterials, Whitening/bleaching, Casts, Models, Cements, Zinc oxide-eugenol, Gutta-percha, Sealer, Adhesive sealant, Impressions
  • Physiology
    The study of the function of organisms.  How major body systems work i.e.: cardiac, renal, hepatic etc.
  • Immunology
    The study of the immune system and it’s responses to stimulation.
  • Emerging concepts, techniques, therapies and technology
    New technology or scientific concepts used to increase basic science knowledge; i.e.: salivary diagnostics.
  • Product/technology training
    Training on specific products that ensure participants use the product/technique safely.  Product training courses should be directed to current users or a product and focus on proper/safe use.  Courses cannot contain any marketing information intended to encourage participants to purchase the product.
