AGD leaders and congressional legislators come together to address issues related to oral health and the dental profession

AGD is working to address the most pressing issues faced by our members as we advocate to government entities for general dentists.

AGD is hosting the 2023 Fall Fellowship Review Course at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C., Oct. 6–7. The Fellowship Exam will take place the following day, Oct. 8, allowing you to use the information you learned while it is still fresh.

Interest is high in bioactive materials because of the role they play in regenerating tissue. AGD Impact Testing the Tools columnist Ross Isbell, DMD, MAGD, of Isbell Dental in Gadsden, Alabama, frequently reviews bioactive materials he tests in his own practice for a variety of applications. For this week’s issue, we highlight a few of his recent reviews.

In November 2022, Dr. Monica F. Anderson presented “What Dentistry Teaches Us About Curbing Racism” at TEDxOshkosh in Wisconsin. She explains that “racism is contagious, like tooth decay. Racism is a contagious social cancer, and it is deadly when left untreated.”

In the latest issue of General Dentistry, Price et al. outline the various applications of artificial intelligence in different dental specialties. Applications range from business functions such as marketing, cybersecurity and report writing to clinical uses such as lesion detection and surgical guidance.

AGD’s Hill Day takes place today and tomorrow in the nation’s capital. More than 40 general dentists and dental students will interact with national health officials and congressional leaders to address issues facing the profession and AGD-supported legislature.

The AGD Advocacy Fund supports national and constituent advocacy efforts by providing resources to tackle new matters, such as legislation or legal action affecting the practice of general dentistry.

On April 18, the AGD submitted a comment to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on their proposal to ban non-compete clauses. The proposed rule would affect one in five workers in the U.S. The AGD asked the FTC to immediately withdraw their proposal as many sections of the proposal require more research and development.

On May 1-3, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hosted the 2023 Quality Conference entitled, Building Resilient Communities: Having an Equitable Foundation for Quality Healthcare.

New graduates face several necessary decisions as far as practice protocols, licensing and more. Whether you are working for a large group practice or as an associate, decisions about insurance and licensing issues have to be made. This section provides the basics on necessary coverage with regard to insurance and licensing.

As new dentists, much of our focus is on improving upon what we just learned in dental school. That can include increasing our speed and efficiency of procedures, developing comprehensive treatment plans, or simply being better leaders of our teams. However, making progress on our foundation in the short term should be balanced with planning our career path for the future.

Congratulations, graduates! Welcome to the best profession in the world. The four years of hard work that you put into obtaining your doctorate were likely full of ups and downs, but you’ve made it. Now, it’s time to go out and find your path in dentistry.
