AGD supports research and information-sharing among general dentists by hosting an annual e-Poster Session during its scientific session. AGD2021 e-posters were reviewed at the meeting last month, and winners were announced. Congratulations to Andrew Chang, Portia Cao, Ryan Allread and Mazen Aly.

This month, AGD Impact examines the current state of research on lasers in dentistry as well as what you need to know to determine if lasers are right for your practice. The issue also covers what dental school and dental practice can be like for deaf practitioners.

AGD Region 1 has established a recognition award and scholarship in honor of the late June Warren Lee, DDS, MAGD, who passed away in 2010. Numerous dentistry organizations benefited from Lee’s volunteerism over the last 40 years, including AGD.

This year’s Convocation Ceremony was striking because of the number of spouses, siblings and family members who were honored together.

AGD2021, AGD’s annual scientific session, was held June 9–12 in Austin, Texas. The meeting was a hybrid event, which included in-person and virtual courses. Nearly 150 courses, including 52 sold-out courses, were presented to over 2,600 registrants.

During AGD2021, the AGD Foundation was able to provide oral cancer screenings to employees of the host hotel, Fairmont Austin, as well as to AGD2021 attendees. The Foundation raised over $22,000 through its electronic silent auction.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through the Health Resources and Services Administration, announced that it is releasing revised reporting requirements for recipients of Provider Relief Fund payments.

Rising dental school debt and provider shortages in underserved areas are two major issues facing dentistry. For dentists, federal debt relief programs reward service to vulnerable populations with debt repayment. For underserved communities, the placement programs provide much-needed care. Are these programs equipped to solve both problems? Or are there additional challenges?

This Saturday, AGD celebrated members who achieved these distinctions in 2021, as well as some who did so in 2020, during a special Convocation Ceremony. Since the 2020 event was cancelled, many AGD members who earned a 2020 recognition or award chose to participate in the 2021 Convocation.
