Jessica L. Gibbs, DDS, is a fourth-generation dentist who considers it “a dream come true” to join her father’s practice. Like the dentists in her family before her, Gibbs believes a dentist’s education continues to evolve beyond dental school.

“I was raised in an environment where dentistry was all around me,” Gibbs said. “All the dentists in my family made continuing education (CE) a priority. Even before dental school, I would attend and participate in various dental meetings with my dad.”

One of Gibbs’ goals is to make CE more accessible for her fellow dentists.

“There are programs and opportunities that many dentists are not aware of or cannot attend due to their busy schedules,” she said. “Helping support the education side of dentistry benefits everyone. It brings the passion and excitement of new technology and advances in the field to both dentists and their patients.”

Since graduating dental school, Gibbs has received two fellowships, one from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the other from the Academy of Dentistry International, and she is currently working toward her AGD Fellowship.

“Dr. Gibbs is taking the Illinois AGD by storm,” said Cheryl L. Mora, DDS, MAGD, regional director of Region 8. “She is involved in running the Chicago AGD lecture series for 2020–2021 and volunteers on the Illinois AGD MasterTrack committee. She is taking the CE she has done to the next level by applying the skills in her practice.”

To those considering dentistry, Gibbs’ advice is to “learn by seeing.”

“Shadow as many different dental offices as you can,” she said. “Every practice has different managerial styles, staff, routines and technology. It’s easy to think everyone is the same, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.”

“It’s important that we see each patient as a person, not as a chart number or procedure.”
