We will review up-to-date techniques and concepts surrounding the most current knowledge base of 3D printing and intraoral scanning.
Learning Objectives
- Identify various sources of error in digital scanning.
- Identify the most accurate scanning strategies for dentate and edentulous patients.
- Identify various types of 3D printing techniques.
- Identify 3D printers used in dentistry with associated accuracy levels.
Maj. Melissa S. Thomas, DDS, MS, FACP, is the chief of prosthodontics and support flight commander for the 96th Dental Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base (AFB), Florida. Thomas grew up in Ellinwood, Kansas. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2012 and commissioned into the United States Navy as a dental officer shortly after graduation. She served as a general dentist in the Navy from 2012 to 2017, stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, and Camp Foster, Okinawa. Thomas is currently stationed at Eglin AFB and commands the prosthodontic curriculum of eight residents at the advanced education in general dentistry-1 program at Eglin AFB, in addition to practicing clinical prosthodontics, with focused efforts toward teaching and furthering digital dentistry.
