This Week at AGD

Attention students, residents and 2022 graduates! The New Dentist Lounge at AGD2022 will feature a mentorship event and reception, free courses, refreshments, and the chance to build lifelong networking connections.

Maxillofacial metastases are rare but signify advanced disease progression. A new case report in General Dentistry describes a patient with previously diagnosed invasive ductal breast carcinoma who developed a metastatic lesion in the maxillary gingiva.

As part of April as Oral Cancer Awareness Month, this issue of AGD Impact features an update from the AGD Foundation on its mission to bring awareness to oral cancer. It also includes the latest in oral cancer research from around the world.

The name of the private practice Edwin T. Batchelor, DDS, FAGD, maintains is Excellence in Dentistry, and those three words come close to saying everything one needs to know about his treatment philosophy.

Nearly 100 AGD members gathered April 1-2 in Chicago for the Leadership Development Symposium to exchange ideas. The meeting, titled “Extraordinary Leadership in Extraordinary Times,” featured opportunities for AGD leaders to engage new individuals and broaden AGD’s reach with students and diverse groups.

“By recruiting colleagues to join AGD, I’ve not only lowered my membership renewal cost, I’m also helping my fellow dentists,” said AGD member Filippo Marchello, DDS, MAGD. Each time a member you refer to AGD joins, you both receive $50 in Referral Rewards.

Patients who have undergone solid-organ transplantation have a 1.8-fold increase in the incidence of plasma cell neoplasms — a diagnosis that covers diseases like multiple myeloma.

AGD’s scientific session will once again include a virtual option for those unable to make it to Orlando. Earn 24 credit hours across eight lectures that will be livestreamed directly from AGD2022, July 27–30. The virtual package also includes a livestream of Walter Bond’s keynote address.

There are currently two live webinars available in April. “Technologies to Change Your Practice-NOW,” presented by John Flucke, DDS, takes place April 16, and AGD members receive a 20% discount. Then, join Ashley Clark, DDS, FACD, for “Oral Cancer & Prevention” on April 28.

This month, AGD Impact takes a detailed look at how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing dentistry and how it will continue to impact the industry.

Dental students, residents and recent graduates are invited to submit their clinical or basic research for the AGD2022 Scientific e-Poster Session. The deadline to submit is May 31 at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

Oral lesions may be the initial or only manifestation of leukemia and can be the key to proper treatment. A retrospective case series in General Dentistry describes the oral manifestations of this disease so that dental practitioners can aid in early diagnosis or recognition of relapse.

In AGD Impact’s Ethics column this month, a collaboration between AGD and the American College of Dentists, Dr. Kathryn Ragalis discusses recent changes in dentistry and how these impact the profession’s standard of excellence. She also offers advice on how all dentists and dental students can remain committed to the pursuit of excellence.

AGD’s Legislative & Government Affairs Council develops policy with a focus on supporting general dentists and the patients we serve. The council recently met to set the agenda for 2022 and prioritize the ways the organization can have a greater impact on public policy.
