Academy of General Dentistry Installs Florida Dentist as New Vice President
The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) recently installed Merlin Ohmer, DDS, MAGD, FICD, as vice president during its Annual Meeting held on November 21, 2021, at McCormick place in Chicago, Illinois. Ohmer steps into this role having served in many other AGD leadership roles in the past. Ohmer is a longtime member of the AGD.
“My long and varied experiences in the military, private practice and organized dentistry have led me to serve the organization as one of its leaders,” said Ohmer, who has a private dental practice in St. Augustine, Florida. “AGD has been there to support me through my 42-year practice history with quality continuing education, advocacy, camaraderie and leadership. I know that I too can help the organization now and in the future.”
Ohmer earned his a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1979 from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry while also serving in the U.S. Army Reserve. Later, Ohmer went on to serve the Louisiana National Guard as a major and practiced dentistry in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, until 1989.
He was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps beginning in 1989. He completed his military career as the staff oral surgeon at Naval Branch Health Clinic, Mayport, Florida, where he retired as a captain after 30 years of active service.
As a member of the Florida AGD, Ohmer has served as a board member, continuing education director, vice president and president. He also served as Region 20 regional director for one year. He now serves as Region 20 trustee.
Ohmer became an AGD trustee in 2020 for Region 20. He has also served as a member of the AGD’s Self-Instruction Council, Fellowship Exam Council, Governance Evaluation and Reform Committee, and as an instructor for its Fellowship Review Course.
In addition to his work with AGD, Ohmer is a member of the American Dental Association, a fellow in the International College of Dentists, a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry and a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He received his Mastership from AGD in 2015.
