From speaking at dental schools across the country, being involved with his state dental association’s mentorship program, leading dental students on global dental mission trips and welcoming predental students into his office, Daryn L. Lu, DDS, gives back any chance he gets.

“Throughout my journey from a predental student to a dentist, I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by incredible mentors,” he said. “Now that I’ve graduated, I’ve embraced every opportunity to mentor students and young dentists.”

“Dr. Daryn Lu has shown leadership throughout dental school and since graduating, not only in the state of Oklahoma with the Oklahoma AGD and Oklahoma Dental Association, but also on the national level with the American Student Dental Association and the American Dental Association (ADA),” said Susan R. Davis, DDS, FAGD, 2018–19 regional director of Region 12.

Lu said that one of his most rewarding experiences in dentistry so far was partnering with the Christian Dental Society to lead a group of dental students and dentists to provide free care overseas. Closer to home, he enjoys volunteering for local dental clinics and organizes oral health screenings at Oklahoma City’s Asian Health Fair each year. Lu was recently appointed to the ADA’s New Dentist Committee, where he hopes to share insights gained from his first years in a dental service organization and private practice. Another goal is to earn his AGD Fellowship and become a practice owner.

To dental students and new dentists, Lu recommends keeping the focus on you.

“I still have nightmares about sitting in preclinical labs, watching my classmates finish their projects while mine breaks at the last minute, then having to start over,” he said. “We never know what it feels like to live in someone else’s position, so focus on what you can control, and be the best dental professional you can be for your patients.”
