In Michigan, SB 541 was approved by the Senate Health Policy Committee.  The bill seeks to establish the dental therapist position in Michigan, and to authorize them to carry out numerous procedures.  In addition, the bill seeks to add two seats to the Michigan Board of Dentistry, which would be filled by dental therapists.

The Michigan AGD has launched a letter-writing campaign, urging Michigan Senators to oppose the bill should it come for a vote before the full chamber.  If you live or practice in Michigan, please take a moment to visit the AGD’s Action Center and contact your state Senator.

Throughout the 2017 legislative session, several state legislatures took action on tobacco related issues.  Maine (LD 1170), New Jersey (S 359), and Oregon (SB 754) all had new laws created raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. 

Additionally, Idaho and Kentucky saw bills passed related to tobacco cessation products and services.  Kentucky’s bill (SB 89) requires insurance coverage for FDA-approved tobacco cessation medicines, and Idaho’s (H 4) allows pharmacists to prescribe tobacco cessation products.  In Arkansas, HB 1080 provides funding for programs related to tobacco prevention.
