The aim of this retrospective study was to present quantitative descriptions of the interforaminal region by evaluating a large series of cone beam computed tomographic images of the mandibles of edentulous patients in need of anterior dental implants. Knowledge of the patient’s anatomical variations will allow the clinician to formulate an individualized treatment plan.

Giant sialolith and tonsillolith with ghost images: rare presentations

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the influence of surface sealant application and erosive challenge on the color alteration of composite resin after coffee staining. Specimens were divided into 4 groups that differed in the timing of sealant application and whether they underwent erosive challenge. Greater color change occurred when sealant application was delayed until after erosive challenge and storage.

This case report documents osteonecrosis of the jaw following herpes zoster infection. Complete resolution of symptoms without recurrence was observed following conservative surgical and antibiotic therapies. Clinicians should be aware of unusual complications of herpes zoster infection.

This case report describes the treatment of a 46-year-old woman with pycnodysostosis that was associated with chronic suppurative osteomyelitis. After 8 days of antibiotic therapy, surgical access was achieved through the left submandibular region, and biopsy and curettage of the lesion and excision of the associated fistula were performed. There was no evidence of lesion recurrence at the 2-year follow-up examination.

In a study evaluating the effect of maternal periodontal disease on the occurrence of preterm birth and low birth weight, new mothers were divided into 2 groups: slight periodontal disease (SPD; n = 15) and moderate to severe periodontal disease (MSPD; n = 30). In the MSPD group, there were moderate, statistically significant negative correlations between the baby’s gestational age at birth and 3 maternal periodontal parameters: gingival crevicular fluid flow, Plaque Control Record, and Gingival Index. In the SPD group, there were no statistically significant correlations between the maternal periodontal parameters and the newborn’s gestational age or birth weight.

Efficacy of calcium hydroxide and resin-modified calcium silicate as pulp-capping materials: a retrospective study

This retrospective study compared the clinical success rates of calcium silicate (TheraCal LC) and conventional calcium hydroxide (Dycal) for direct and indirect pulp-capping procedures in permanent teeth. There were no statistically significant differences in the success rates, suggesting that calcium silicate can be considered equivalent in efficacy to calcium hydroxide for both procedures.

The flexural strength and Knoop microhardness of polymethyl methacrylate following exposure to total therapeutic radiation doses of 50 and 70 Gy were evaluated in an vitro study. After exposure, the specimens showed improvement in both properties compared to a control group that was not exposed to radiation.

Masticatory efficiency of implant-supported mandibular overdentures retained with attachments compared with conventional dentures: an in vitro digital colorimetric image analysis

A color-mixing test was used to compare the chewing efficiency of patients with complete dentures and patients with mandibular implant-supported overdentures. Patients simultaneously chewed 2 colors of chewing gum, and software was used to analyze the resulting variation of hue. No statistically significant differences were found, suggesting that an implant overdenture has no advantage over a conventional complete denture with regard to masticatory efficiency in patients who have a well-formed mandibular ridge.

In a randomized controlled clinical trial of 70 patients, the administration of mental-incisive nerve block with pressure following inferior nerve block significantly improved the success of anesthesia in mandibular first molars with asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis compared to inferior alveolar nerve block alone.

A systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to determine if the non-ionizing radiation emitted by mobile phones has genotoxic and/or cytotoxic effects on the oral epithelium. The 6 studies evaluated in the systematic review presented a low degree of evidence, but meta-analysis of 2 studies indicated that no genotoxic effects are associated with mobile phone use. However, observations of nuclear abnormalities in some studies suggest the possible occurrence of cytotoxic effects.

Esthetic treatment of buccal exostoses: a case report

This case report describes the surgical treatment of bilateral maxillary exostoses that represented an undesirable esthetic alteration to the patient. Reflection of full-thickness flaps and careful osteotomy resulted in flat buccal bone ridges and a clear esthetic improvement that remained stable at the follow-up examinations.
