Orofacial radiographic manifestations in patients with sickle cell disease

Orofacial radiographic features of patients with sickle cell disease were compared with those of age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. Patients in the study group exhibited generalized osteopenia, enlarged medullary spaces, thinning of the inferior border of the mandible, and radiopaque lesions significantly more frequently than healthy individuals, suggesting that orofacial imaging can identify signs of osteoporosis in patients with sickle cell disease.

A data mining analysis of the literature was performed to evaluate the knowledge of oral health during pregnancy among pregnant women and healthcare professionals. Knowledge was generally low; the main factors associated were education level for pregnant women and practice duration for healthcare professionals. Interventional studies showed that knowledge increased with oral health education.

Pathophysiology of referred pain in dentistry: a case report

A 42-year-old woman reported chronic pain in her left temporomandibular joint, limited mouth opening, anxiety, and difficulty in sleeping. Cone beam computed tomography revealed impacted maxillary third molars and hypertrophy of the nasal turbinates. Infiltration anesthesia completely eliminated the pain, indicating that the patient was experiencing referred pain. Additional research is needed to better understand the mechanisms of referred pain and contributory psychological factors.

Within the last decade, the number of patients with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has markedly increased in all age groups. However, clinicians may not always consider the inclusion of STIs in their differential diagnosis for older adults. To heighten awareness of secondary syphilis in this subpopulation, this article discusses an unusual case of a deeply ulcerated syphilitic lesion along the floor of the mouth that mimicked a malignancy.

An unusual presentation of a traumatic bone cyst: a mixed-density variant in the mandibular ramus

The present report describes an exceptional case of a traumatic bone cyst that displayed a mixed radiolucency and was located in the mandibular ramus. This case is a reminder that traumatic bone cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis for mixed lesions, particularly because the treatment for traumatic bone cyst is much more conservative than that for many other lesions with similar appearance.

This case report outlines the procedural sequence used for anterior diastema closure via laminated lithium disilicate veneers fabricated with a CAD/CAM system. The inclusion of provisional printed veneers in the planning process enabled minimal enamel removal for the placement of thin laminated veneers, successfully restoring the esthetic harmony of the patient’s smile.
