Basic Science A quantitative evaluation of the effects of potassium iodide on the clinical properties of silver diamine fluoride
Samaddar KrittikaFull Article (PDF)

Potassium iodide (KI) has been reported to minimize the staining caused by silver diamine fluoride (SDF). This in vitro study used quantitative evaluation of color changes and silver and fluoride release to determine the effect of KI on the staining and caries-arresting properties of SDF. Results indicated that KI lost its stain-reducing property over time and reduced the effectiveness of SDF.

When 2 types of composite resin were immersed in coffee or tea after polishing with either aluminum oxide discs or diamond-impregnated spiral wheels, the color stability of all polished specimens was found to be clinically acceptable. The coloring agent had a greater effect on color stability than the polishing technique or type of composite resin, and coffee had a greater effect than tea.

This in vitro study assessed the color stability of resins used for temporary prostheses. Specimens of self-curing acrylic resin, heat-curing acrylic resin (polymerized with either a pressure-curing or a flasking technique), and CAD/CAM polymethyl methacrylate resin were immersed for up to 28 days in cola, coffee, tea, or turmeric solution. The turmeric solution showed the greatest coloring ability, and the CAD/CAM specimens had the greatest color stability.
