The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) recently announced that Joseph A. Picone, DMD, MAGD, a general dentist from Plantsville, Connecticut, was reelected as treasurer during its Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois on November 24, 2024. Picone is a longtime AGD member with 36 years of experience in organized dentistry and was originally elected to this role in 2022.

“My experience and background in budgeting and finance, coupled with my deep understanding of our organization’s needs, uniquely position me to continue making a positive impact on the financial health and strategic planning of our organization,” said Picone. “I am firm in my belief that AGD can more clearly define its role and become an indispensable factor in the professional life of the successful general dentist.”

Since becoming a dentist, Picone has been very active with the AGD and other professional dental organizations. Before being elected AGD treasurer, he has served two three-year terms on the AGD Scientific Meeting Council (SMC) and was chair for four years. He has served as regional director for AGD’s Region 1. In addition, he has served as a member of the AGD Budget & Finance Committee as its chair.

Picone received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biophysics in 1984 and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1988 from the University of Connecticut. During dental school, he was active on the honor board. He received the prestigious Lewis Fox Award, which is given to a graduating student who is judged to be the best all-around, in both clinical and didactic performance.

Outside of the AGD, Picone has served in several capacities with many other organizations. He has served as chair of the Connecticut State Dental Association’s (CSDA’s) Continuing Education (CE) Council for 14 years. In this role, he has worked with council volunteers and the CSDA team to build a highly successful CE program and annual meeting serving the Connecticut dental community, implementing strategies to increase non-dues revenue. He is also a trustee of the Connecticut State Dental Foundation, a role he has served for the past 13 years.

Picone has been a member of the American Dental Association for 35 years and has served as a delegate and alternate delegate from Connecticut for four years. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists (2004), International College of Dentists (2006), and Pierre Fauchard Academy (1998) and a member of the American Association of Dental Consultants (2020). His strong belief in the importance of continuing education and AGD’s ideals inspired him to achieve AGD Fellowship (2002) and a Mastership (2009). He was honored to receive two AGD Presidential Awards (2017 and 2021).

Currently, Picone is on medical leave from clinical private practice.  He is married to Carmelina Picone and has three children.
