On February 13, 2025, the Senate voted to confirm Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), by a vote of 52-48. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was the lone Republican to vote against Mr. Kennedy’s confirmation, in addition to every Democratic Senator. Mr. Kennedy’s confirmation followed a pair of contested hearings before the Senate Committee on Finance and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), featuring sharp criticism from Democratic members for his previous statements on vaccines and lack of experience in federal health care policy.

Impact on General Dentistry: The AGD has been closely tracking Mr. Kennedy’s nomination and will continue to monitor HHS activity under his leadership. He has previously expressed opposition to fluoride, stating that fluoride is “industrial waste” causing serious medical conditions. The AGD understands the importance of fluoride for preventing cavities and tooth decay and is prepared to advocate on this topic as needed.
