Illinois AGD Dentists Volunteer at the Special Olympics
Spencer Bloom, DDS, his wife, Kimbra, and Rosemary Villa, DDS, FADI, MAGD, volunteered their time at the Special Olympics Special Smiles program. The Special Smiles program provides comprehensive oral health care information, free screenings and instructions on correct brushing and flossing techniques to participating Special Olympics athletes. Special Smiles has demonstrated remarkable success in creating awareness and improving access to dental care for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
“It is important to me to help wherever I can,” said Bloom. “Special Smiles is committed to doing dental screenings for this vulnerable population at this event, and my wife and I have had the privilege of participating for the past six years.”
Special Olympics is designated as an Approved PACE Program Provider by AGD. The formal continuing education (CE) programs of this program provider are accepted by AGD for Fellowship, Mastership and membership maintenance credit. To earn CE credits at the Special Olympics Special Smiles Program, you must attend the one-hour course that precedes the oral screening of Special Olympics athletes. You will also earn CE credits by spending time providing dental screenings, nutritional counseling and oral hygiene instruction for the athletes.
