Alabama general dentist Gordon R. Isbell, III, DMD, MAGD, is the Academy of General Dentistry’s (AGD) 2023 recipient for the Mark S. Ritz Advocate for Dentistry Award. The award was presented to Isbell during AGD’s Annual Meeting on Nov. 10 in Chicago, IL. Isbell is only the sixth AGD member to receive this prestigious award since its inception. The Ritz Award is named after Dr. Mark S. Ritz, who was a well-known and respected AGD leader for his advocacy efforts in organized dentistry. The award recipient must distinguish themselves with national-level advocacy in an active, visible, and successful manner, but not preclude state or local advocacy. This award is not presented every year and is given to individuals when deserved and appropriate.

“Dr. Isabell III has served the AGD in several capacities of leadership and I think he deserves the Mark S. Ritz Award,” said Merlin Ohmer, DDS, MAGD, AGD President. “In each role he has served, he has been true advocate for the AGD and its members.”

Isbell has served as chairman of the Group Benefits Council, regional director of Region 19, trustee, and member of the Credentials and Elections Council. Isbell’s efforts were previously recognized with AGD’s Distinguished Service Award in 2015.

Isbell has also been active with the American Dental Association (ADA), including serving as co-chairman from 2012 to 2014 of the ADA’s American Dental Political Action Committee (ADPAC). In 2015, he received the ADPAC’s Jack Wilson Award for Advocacy.
