AGD Submits Comments on EPA Fluoride Assessment Plan
AGD has submitted formal comments to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin regarding the agency’s proposed Fluoride Preliminary Assessment Plan and Literature Survey.Representing approximately 40,000 general dentists nationwide, AGD emphasized that the EPA’s review should be grounded in high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific evidence. The organization urged the agency to prioritize studies published in reputable journals and align its evaluation standards with those of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, widely recognized as the gold standard in scientific peer review.
AGD cautioned against relying on non–peer-reviewed research or studies conducted in countries where fluoride exposure levels exceed the 0.7-milligrams-per-liter standard used in U.S. community water systems. The organization also noted quality concerns about studies cited in findings from the National Toxicology Program and encouraged careful evaluation of fluoride measurement methodologies.
AGD stated that a rigorous, evidence-based review will continue to support the safety of community water fluoridation at U.S. levels.
