AGD Comments on NASEM Framework for COVID-19 Vaccination Allocation
AGD submitted comments on September 4 to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) in response to their Discussion Draft of the Preliminary Framework for Equitable Allocation of COVID-19 Vaccine (2020). In the 114 page draft, the NASEM recognized dentists as frontline health care clinicians and included dentists in the highest priority group for the initial phase rollout of vaccines.
In its comments to NASEM, AGD acknowledged this crucial aspect of the draft, and advocated for dentists to administer vaccines and act as a workforce multiplier to assist during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, AGD strongly advised against premature FDA approval or Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of vaccines that cannot be assured to be safe and effective.
Impact on General Dentistry: AGD is pleased of NASEM’s inclusion of dentists in the tentative initial allocation for COVID-19 vaccinations, as well as their acknowledgement of dentists as frontline health care clinicians. We appreciate the opportunity to submit comments to the draft framework and will continue to advocate for an effective, final method of allocating COVID-19 vaccinations.
