AMA Ends Partnership with Group Opposing Medicare Expansion
The American Medical Association confirmed it is no longer affiliated with the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future, an organization it helped found and who’s led the charge against Medicare expansion on behalf of the health care industry. The partnership is comprised of nearly 60 groups including the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).
The decision to leave the partnership follows a June agreement at the AMA’s annual House of Delegates meeting to study the feasibility of a public option after years of opposing single-payer health care. In a statement, CEO James Madara said, “the AMA firmly believes that the best pathway to expand affordable, high quality health insurance coverage to all Americans is through a mix of private and public health insurance options. We remain opposed to Medicare for All, and policies that reduce patient choice and competition, and are built on flawed financing policies.”
Impact on General Dentistry: The AGD continues to support enhanced benefits and reimbursement in private sector initiatives for dental benefits while remaining opposed to the expansion of Medicare to include dental benefits. AGD has not taken a position on the concept of a “Medicare for All” system but continues to monitor health care proposals and their impact on general dentistry.
