    Digital Radiology Digital intraoral radiographic quality assurance and control in private practice

    Working with a representative sample of private practice dental offices, this study examined and evaluated the entire digital intraoral radiographic system used in each operatory. The X-ray machine was tested for equipment performance and accuracy, and the computer monitor calibration was evaluated and adjusted as needed. The results confirm the continued need for updated QA procedures in the dental office that include digital X-ray imaging.

    This article reports the case of a 22-year-old man with dull intermittent pain and swelling in the mandible. Histopathological examination revealed a unicystic ameloblastoma of a luminal, intraluminal, and intramural histological subgroup, which has a high risk for recurrence.

    This article presents the case of a 58-year-old woman with a chief complaint of periodic discomfort in her maxillary “gums” and redness in the facial gingival tissues of the maxillary anterior segment. The patient revealed that she had been using a water jet device on a high pressure setting. She was advised to discontinue the water jet use, after which the gingival redness and inflammation began to subside, and appeared normal at 3- and 6-month follow-up visits.

    This article presents a case of cherubism in a 5-year-old girl with painless bilateral swelling. Panoramic radiographs and computed tomography showed bilateral multilocular radiolucent areas with cortical expansion. Histopathologic examination revealed proliferating fibrous connective tissue containing numerous multinucleated giant cells.

    This article presents 2 patients with blue nevi in the oral cavity, and reviews the differential diagnosis of solitary pigmented lesions, including oral melanoma. The importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of oral pigmentations in general, and of melanocytic nevi in particular, is underlined in order to help the general dentist manage patients presenting with such lesions.

    Using soft tissue grafts to correct an esthetic deficiency may be a feasible approach for establishing new and stable gingival and papilla contours. Altering the shape of a residual ridge by gradual hydropressure is another promising technique to improve tissue contour.
