Diagnosis and management of antiresorptive-related osteonecrosis of the jaw
Salvatore L. Ruggiero, DMD, MD, FACSFull Article (PDF)
Antiresorptive medications have proven to be extremely efficacious in the treatment of disorders of bone remodeling and metabolism. However, the benefits of these agents have been offset to some degree by the occurrence of jaw necrosis in a subset of patients receiving these medications. Recent studies have made significant progress toward understanding antiresorptive-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Facial rejuvenation using neurotoxins and injectable fillers
Full Article (PDF)Joe Niamtu III, DMD
This paper reviews some of the most common injectable cosmetic treatments with an emphasis on dental-related applications. The safe and effective administration of injectable fillers and neurotoxins require a command of head and neck anatomy and physiology, pain control, and injection expertise, which puts dentistry in an optimal position for providing these treatments.

Sedation in the oral and maxillofacial surgery office
Full Article (PDF)Stuart E. Lieblich, DMD
With the administration of appropriate local anesthetics, most dental procedures can be accomplished without eliciting pain. However, even with a complete blockade of pain, the pressure and noises associated with a surgical tooth extraction makes it intolerable for many patients to consider the procedure without being “asleep.”

Kent A. Sabey, DDSThis study evaluated the shear-bond strength of a resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) restorative material to a new silorane-based composite and a methacrylate-based composite in a sandwich technique with various combinations of surface treatments and bonding agents. The greatest bond strengths to the RMGI were produced when using the silorane system adhesive agent with the methacrylate composite.

Karina Matthes de Freitas Pontes, DDS, MSD, PhDThe aim of this study was to compare the effect of 2 polishing systems and reglazing of dental porcelain on surface roughness. Significant differences were found between the ground and treated values for all groups. The silicon carbide system re-established the initial surface smoothness, while polishing with diamond rubber or reglazing alone were not able to achieve a satisfactory smoothness.

Paulo Francisco Cesar, DDS, MSc, PhDThis study sought to determine the microshear bond strength of 4 luting cements to zirconia subjected to water storage and surface treatment. Surface treatment increased the bond strength to zirconia for 3 of the 4 cements tested. Even after a relatively long period of water storage, the results indicated that surface treatment did not significantly decrease the bond strength values for the same 3 cements.
