AGD President Admonishes The Atlantic Article and Calls for Dentists to Uphold Ethical Standards
In an effort to highlight the unethical business practices of one dentist, The Atlantic, in an article published online last week, suggested that the profession of dentistry lacks sound science and evidence of best practices. The Academy of General Dentistry’s president, Dr. Neil J. Gajjar, DDS, MAGD, responded with a letter to the editor commending the disclosure of such poor business ethics while also admonishing the magazine’s position and blatant attack on the industry.
“Organized dentistry and its members are working together to advance the profession of dentistry and find answers to difficult questions such as those surrounding access to care issues,” said Dr. Gajjar, DDS, MAGD, president of AGD. “We work diligently through partnerships to bridge the gap between the dental and medical communities because oral health is a definitive medical practice. We utilize clinical guidelines and peer-reviewed research, much of it published in The Journal of General Dentistry, to ensure we are practicing to the highest standards.”
In a followup AGD blog post on the Daily Grind, Dr. Gajjar addressed membership calling for open dialogue about diagnoses and treatment options with patients.
“Maintaining good oral health should be easy and accessible. We must continue to strive to be partners to our patients who put their trust in us,” Gajjar said. Read blog post.
