The Right Way to Get Rid of the Wrong Patient [TLLJ2]
Thursday, Jul 10, 2025: 1:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Credits: 0.75
AGD Subject Code: 550: Practice Management and Human Relations
Course Type: Lecture
Fee: $0

This lecture focuses on the legal foundation of the doctor-patient relationship — how it is formed and how it is terminated. The duties, rights and responsibilities of both the doctor and patient will be discussed in detail. We will also review the legally required step-by-step protocol necessary when dismissing a patient from one’s practice to avoid claims of patient abandonment. This course is designed for the entire dental team, providing essential legal insights that apply to all members of the practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn criteria that courts use to determine the existence of a doctor-patient relationship, without which there is no foundation for assessing legal liability to a patient.
  • Understand the nuances of the types of interactions that constitute a doctor-patient relationship.
  • Learn how to employ the proper legally-mandated steps when terminating a doctor-patient relationship.
  • Understand the distinctions between discontinuing active treatment and terminating the relationship.
  • Identify what actions constitute patient abandonment.

Clinical Necessity of Pinhole® Surgical Technique for Gingival Recession [TLJC2]
Thursday, Jul 10, 2025: 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM
Credits: 0.75
AGD Subject Code: 770: Self-Improvement
Course Type: Lecture
Fee: $0

Gingival recession impacts esthetics and oral health, causing root exposure, sensitivity and increased periodontal disease risk. If untreated, it can worsen tissue destruction, exacerbate periodontal disease and cause systemic health issues. This presentation will explore the latest clinical evidence supporting the treatment of gingival recession as a necessary intervention rather than an elective procedure. The Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) is a scalpel-free, suture-free treatment for gingival recession. Recent studies, including randomized controlled trials and long-term case series, demonstrate that the PST offers predictable root coverage with sustained clinical success.
This session aims to equip general dentists with evidence-based knowledge to make informed clinical decisions, integrating periodontal plastic surgical techniques into their practice to enhance both patient outcomes and long-term oral health.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate the clinical implications of untreated gingival recession, including its impact on periodontal and systemic health.
  • Compare the efficacy of traditional connective tissue grafting and the PST in achieving long-term root coverage.
  • Analyze CBCT evidence demonstrating alveolar bone preservation and potential bone gain following PST.
  • Recognize the limitations of Class V restorations in addressing the permeability barrier associated with gingival recession.
  • Integrate minimally invasive periodontal plastic surgical techniques into clinical practice for enhanced patient care and esthetic outcomes.

Maxillary Sinusitis of Odontogenic Origin [FLJD1]
Friday, Jul 11, 2025: 10:15 AM - 11:00 AM
Credits: 0.75
AGD Subject Code: 730: Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis, Oral Pathology
Course Type: Lecture
Fee: $0

Maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic origin is an under-recognized condition that is poorly imaged with standard panoramic or periapical radiographs. Patients often shuttle between ENT and dental professionals in an attempt to diagnose headache, postnasal drip, sinus problems and a host of related symptoms — all without relief because insufficient imaging has failed to identify the odontogenic cause. The use of CBCT imaging has been the single most important technology to help diagnose this problem. This course covers examples of cases where standard radiography missed important diagnostic information and the CBCT scan confirmed the diagnosis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify maxillary sinusitis.
  • Identify the limits of standard dental radiography and routine paradigms to find maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic origin.
  • Learn the value of a CBCT scan in diagnosis.
  • Learn the radiologic hallmarks of maxillary odontogenic infection.
  • Use a CBCT scan to diagnose and treat maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic origin.

Malocclusions in Children and Sleep-Disordered Breathing Connected [FLGR2]
Friday, Jul 11, 2025: 1:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Credits: 0.75
AGD Subject Code: 370: Orthodontics
Course Type: Lecture
Fee: $0

Sleep and breathing disorders may be associated with deviations in craniofacial growth and development. In this lecture, German Ramirez, DDS, MDSc, MSc, PhD, will present insights on craniofacial growth and development that can help clinicians intercept developing malocclusions in children at a very early age. He will also provide context about how developing correct mouth structure and proper oral function helps produce a better airway. Ramirez’s lecture will provide insights on how deviation in craniofacial growth may impact the airway in children and requires a myofunctional approach to intercept developing malocclusions at an early age.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the association between craniofacial structural and functional disturbances with sleep and breathing disorders.
  • Comprehend the differences between obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (OSDB) and pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • Expound on the consequences of chronic mouth-breathing on the patient’s general health.
  • Understand how a myofunctional orthodontic treatment intending to correct all the factors that may be causing the malocclusion may result in a better airway for young patients.
