Speaker Biography Dr. Gerard Kugel is Associate Dean for Research, and Professor of Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. With an expertise in Clinical Research and Esthetic Dentistry, he is a reviewer for The New England Journal of Medicine, JADA, Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, Esthetic Technique and The Dental Advisor. He is on the Editorial Board of Practical Periodontics and Aesthetic Dentistry, Compendium, The Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry, and The Journal of Adhesive Dentistry and he is Editor and Chief of Inside Dentistry. He is a Fellow in the American and International Colleges of Dentistry as well as the Academy of General Dentistry and the Academy of Dental Materials. Dr Kugel is on the Board of Directors of the CRA. Dr. Kugel received his B.S. in Biology and Psychology from Rutgers University. He received his doctorate in dentistry from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Kugel also received his M.S. from Tufts Medical School in the Department of Anatomy and Cellular Biology. Dr. Kugel has his Ph.D. in Dental Materials from the University of Siena, Italy. Dr. Kugel has published over 100 articles and 170 abstracts in the field of restorative materials and techniques. He was given over 200 lectures both nationally and internationally. Dr. Kugel is part of a group practice, the Boston Center for Oral Health, located in Back Bay, Boston. The Do’s and Don’ts of Porcelain Laminate Veneers The first part of this program will include lecture material that will emphasize the Do’s and more importantly the Don’ts of porcelain Veneers. Topics covered: • Treatment planning and case selection for veneers along with preparation tips. • Clinical cases are shown to demonstrate these topics. • Long term maintenance of your veneer case. • The most common problems associated with Porcelain Veneers and ways of avoiding these mistakes. • Working as a team The lecture is followed by a hand-on work shop. Topics covered: • Preparation options, when to use them. • A veneer preparation reduction guide will be fabricated along with silicone temporary shells. • Three different types of preps will be practiced on typodonts. • Flowing preparation we will fabricate temporary restorations. • We will review proper techniques for cementation This course is designed to help dentists incorporate veneers into their everyday practice. Esthetic Dentistry: Keys to Success As dentists we must not only rely on the materials but on our own ability to treatment plan and diagnose based on a multi-factorial situation. We must be careful in our preparation, design, and be meticulous in our bonding techniques. Failures in dentistry are frequently blamed on the materials. In reality; “user error” is often the culprit. In this one day seminar, Dr Kugel will highlight the latest information and evidence on a variety of esthetic dentistry related topics and clinical procedures. Aimed at dentists and their staff, this course will provide relevant clinical information to assist dentists in their everyday practice. Participants will learn: • A comprehensive review of core principles of esthetic dentistry related to prevention, tooth form and function - tooth position, occlusal function, lip line and incisal edge location. Most important, what you need to know to stay out of trouble. • Why esthetics is secondary to proper function! • Case selection, treatment planning and long term maintenance. • All-ceramic options for indirect anterior and posterior restorations. • Porcelain laminate veneers, what not to do. • Digital impression making, has it’s time finally come? • Advances in adhesive dentistry. Are the new generations all they are claimed to be? • Tooth whitening, “in-office” and “take-home”, how they work and what is best for your patients. Light-activated bleaching - the facts! • Practical and cost effective information that you can use immediately in your practice. The Art and Science of Tooth Whitening: Fact vs. Fiction Tooth Whitening has become easy, rewarding and profitable. New systems are being brought to market at a dizzying pace. • Should I do a chairside or take-home bleaching? • Do the over-the-counter whitening products work? • How do I incorporate them into my clinical practice? • What about a combination of chairside and take-home? • What do I tell my patients about OTC products, which are best? • How safe is bleaching, does it damage my teeth? • Does light activated whitening work? In this course we will review the different systems on the market as well as those on the horizon. The pros and cons of bleaching will be covered. The use of different light sources to speed up the whitening process will be evaluated. Issues of sensitivity, mechanism of action and longevity will be discussed.
