Speaker Biography Dr. Molinari received a B.A. in Biology from St. Vincent College and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. He has published over 300 scientific articles, text chapters, and abstracts in the areas of microbiology and immunology, and lectures nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and infection control. Dr. Molinari is also co-author of the text Practical Infection Control in Dentistry, with the 3rd edition scheduled for publication in 2009. His activities also include serving as a consultant for the CDC, ADA Council on Scientific Affairs, Council on Dental Practice, and hospitals in the Detroit area in the areas of infectious disease and infection control. Previously, he was the Project Coordinator for the governmental Health Resources and Services Administration Task Force on AIDS and Dental Education, as well as Chairman of the American Association of Dental School’s Curriculum Advisory Committee on Bloodborne Infectious Diseases. Dr. Molinari also was appointed and served as Chairman of the State of Michigan Governor’s Risk Reduction and AIDS Policy Commission. He has been the infection control section editor for The Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry and a member of the Editorial Board for The Journal of the American Dental Association. In recognition of his efforts, Dr. Molinari was inducted as an honorary member of the Michigan Dental Association, the International college of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists. Course Descriptions Title: Vaccine Recommendations for Health-Care Professionals: Science, Success & Misperceptions This seminar will consider vaccination as an effective public health approach for protection of both the general population and health care professionals. Emphasis will focus on vaccines used in the prevention of adult infectious disease, especially those with increased occupational risks for health care workers. The rationale and classification of available vaccines will be discussed in order to provide participants appropriate scientific and clinical evidence, which can be useful when considering the necessity for their own protection, as well as protection of the general public and individuals diagnosed with immune compromising conditions and diseases. In addition, information will be presented concerning certain perceptions against vaccines which threaten their documented global success against many preventable infections. The overall goal is to present updated scientific and clinical information aimed at fostering a better understanding of the major historical role vaccines gave played in prevention of infectious disease, as well as the outlook for future advances. Title: Allergic Patients and Dental Care Providers: Practice Implications Upon completion of this course, the participant should understand that virtually every chemical, drug and dental material employed in the dental office has been known to induce allergic reactions in both clinical personnel and patients, that certain allergic reactions are directly observable in the oro-facial tissues and that practitioners will be treating patients who may suffer from allergic conditions. The clinician should be prepared for the potential hazards these individuals present during dental treatment. Comprehension of the classes of hypersensitive reactions, clinical manifestations, and principles associated with development and treatment of allergies are thus required for the effective management of patients. Discussion will also include immunological mechanisms and manifestations of allergic reactions associated with latex components and products, as well as evolving prevention strategies. This course will consider the multi-faceted aspects of clinical hypersensitivity reactions, and the participants should be able to apply the principles discussed to clinical situations and patient histories encountered. Title: Emerging Infectious Diseases Infectious diseases described over the past 4 decades include those caused by newly discovered microbial pathogens, re-emergent infections with drug-resistant strains, and infections which have become increasingly resistant to previously successful antimicrobials. In addition to presenting threats to the general population, a number of these infections also present occupational risks to health care providers. This seminar will consider challenges presented by multiple microbial groups and diseases, including blood-borne pathogens (hepatitis B and C viruses), bioaerosols (influenza viruses {including pandemic influenza} and tuberculosis), and direct contact (staphylococcal infections including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus {MRSA}) in the context of current epidemiology and scientific evidence. This seminar will also consider vaccination as a well-established, effective, public health infection control approach for protection of both the general population and health care professionals. Information will be presented concerning certain perceptions against vaccines which threaten their documented global success against many preventable diseases. Title: Infection Control Update: That Thing You Do -- Why Do You Do That? In December 2003, the U.S. CDC published their most recent Guidelines for Infection Control in Dentistry. That document, along with OSHA regulations and recent updates concerning occupational health care worker infections, will serve as frameworks for this presentation. Evidence-based information reflecting the most recent scientific and clinical data will be discussed to reinforce and expand the rationale for specific recommendations. Another major goal is help dental professionals increase their understanding of both the “why” and the “what” of the most recent guidelines. This seminar’s overall objective is to increase understanding of occupational microbial hazards, and to use that awareness as an impetus to routinely follow appropriate precautions designed to promote the highest safety standards for both health-care workers and patients. Title: Infections in Immune Compromised Persons Clinicians continue to encounter an increasing number of patients who have been diagnosed with diseases and conditions which compromise host immune defenses. A common major challenge resulting from the original medical problem is subsequent immunosuppression and predisposition of the person to infection. This discussion will consider selected diagnosed diseases which can manifest quantitative or qualitative defects in immune capabilities, along with a resultant patient susceptibility to a variety of microbial infections. Included will be persons with representative autoimmune disorders (i.e. systemic lupus erythematosus), cirrhosis and other liver dysfunctions, diabetes mellitus, functional or anatomic asplenia, leukopenic challenges resulting from neoplasia or transplantation, as well as multiple acquired immune deficiency syndromes arising as sequelae to a primary microbial infection. In an emerging era of opportunistic infection, medical and dental clinicians must strive to develop stronger professional relationships, in order to best address multiple infectious disease challenges for this expanding patient population. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
