Description
If you’ve ever felt the frustration of unpredictable results in splint therapy, you’re not alone. Join Warren F. Jesek, DDS, MAGD, for this eye-opening course as we zero in on the dentist’s role in diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) conditions as they relate to occlusion. Jesek will cover concepts and techniques for non-directive splint design, delivery and adjustment, as well as clarification of the principles of occlusion and equilibration of the natural dentition and restorations. As an alumnus of both the Pankey and Dawson Institutes and past-president of the American Equilibration Society, and drawing upon his 40 years’ experience in treating complex restorative cases, Jesek is uniquely qualified to help you improve this and treatment of occlusomuscular/temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) within your practice. Participants will learn delivery and adjustment protocols that will enhance the effectiveness of conservative TMD treatment.
Hands-on and lecture topics to include:
- Muscle palpation.
- TMJ palpation and auscultation.
- Bite recordings using intraoral scanners and analog.
- Bimanual guidance training.
- Delivery of emergency appliances to relieve occlusal pain.
- Occlusion and technology, including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
- Intraoral scanning.
- 3D printing.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles of mastication, including their roles in oral function and health.
- Learn how to utilize bimanual guidance and palpation techniques for evaluating the health of the TMJ and the muscles of mastication.
- Identify the impact of occlusomuscular disorders on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and when occlusal treatments can be reliably implemented.
- Familiarize yourself with imaging modalities (panoramic radiography, CT, CBCT, MRI) for diagnosing TMJ conditions and planning treatment.
- Understand the dentist’s role in TMJ rehabilitation, including the use of precision occlusal appliances and emergency appliances for pain management, to improve restorative outcomes.
Warren F. Jesek, DDS, MAGD, earned his dental degree from the Loyola University Dental School in 1979. He maintains a general dentistry practice in Decatur, Illinois, with a strong emphasis on conservative treatment of occlusomuscular disorders. Throughout his career, his articles have been featured in Dentistry Today, Dental Economics, the Pankeygram and the American Equilibrium Society’s (AES’s) Contact.
He is a member of the American Dental Association (ADA) and AGD. He is also an L.D. Pankey and Dawson alumnus and was a teaching assistant in the head and neck dissection course at the Pankey Institute. He is a reviewer of TMD literature submissions for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
