Course Description:
The “Non-pharmacologic Behavior Guidance of Children in the General Dental Practice” lecture is designed to familiarize the general dentist with concepts they will encounter in the various clinical settings. The attendees will learn how to best utilize simple behavior guidance techniques to enhance communication with young children and care givers in private practice set-up. The lecture content and objectives adhere to the 2021 American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Oral Health Policies & Recommendations (Reference Manual).
Objectives and topics covered:
*Definitions of “behavior guidance”, and “behavior management”.
*Classifications of human behavior, growth, development with specific emphasis on psychological, classic and contemporary behavior learning theories.
*Cultural and social context of children’s behavior in the dental environment.
*Effective communication – recognize aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication relating to dental phobia, and anxiety.
*Practical tips that can be utilized in most general practice set-ups to enhance communication with pediatric patients.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Sapir graduated from
Hebrew University Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in 1995. He completed 3.5 year advanced education in pediatric dentistry program with distinction. He completed RMO's 2 year course in comprehensive Orthodontics. He graduated top of his class from an additional advanced standing dental program at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Sapir is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and a former faculty at Hadassah's Pediatric Dentistry Department, and the Associate Program Director of the NYU- Lutheran Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program in Providence, RI. Untill recently he served as the Associate Program Director of the Boston University Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program in Boston, MA. Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of Pediatric Dental Sedation as well as director of Special Health Care Need management course. He was the Associate Director of the Department of Dentistry at Franciscan Children's Hospital.
Dr. Sapir is an active member of the
American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry,
The American Dental Association, and the
Massachusetts Dental Association. He has published numerous articles in peer reviewed pediatric dentistry journals, and is a sought after lecturer, nationally and internationally on topics such as sedation, trauma, orthodontics and emergency management in the dental office. Over the course of his career Dr. Sapir was granted numerous awards for excellence in academic research, teaching, and clinical skills. Most recently he received the Richard C. Pugh Award presented by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry for exemplary achievement on the 2016 Qualifying Examination. He has been selected by his peers as one of the greater Boston's top pediatric dentists for 2018 and again at 2019 (by Boston Magazine). He was awarded the Best Teacher Award for 2020 by the Pediatric dentistry residents at Boston University.
