Description

This continuing education course introduces the dental care team to key topics related to providing dental care for older adult patients. The older adult population continues to grow, and we as healthcare providers need to be prepared to care for them. Physical, mental and social changes associated with increased age can have negative effects on oral and overall health. The course covers care considerations and coordination among individuals, caregivers and interdisciplinary care team members.

Learning Objectives 

  • Identify demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with increased risk of oral disease among older adults.
  • Complete caries risk assessments for older adults.
  • Understand the connection between oral health and common systemic conditions among older adults.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies for improved engagement, communication and clinical practice.

Speaker Bio  

Nathan R. Smith, DMD, MPH, FAGD, spent his early career serving as a clinical dentist and director of dental health for the Jefferson County Department of Health. During this time, he earned his MPH from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health in 2010. In 2021, he joined UAB School of Dentistry as a full-time assistant professor and director of geriatric dentistry. Smith provides direct patient care at the UAB 1917 Dental Clinic.
