IHS to End Use of Mercury-Containing Dental Amalgam by 2027

  • by AGD Washington Advocacy Representative
  • Feb 18, 2026
On February 9, 2026, the Indian Health Service (IHS) announced that it would end the use of dental amalgam in its facilities by 2027. In a press release, HHS stated that “growing environmental and health concerns regarding mercury exposure” have prompted the agency to transition to mercury-free restorative materials across IHS and tribal dental programs. This action follows guidance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding safety concerns about mercury-containing materials for certain populations.

The press release can be found here

Impact on General Dentistry: AGD policy that amalgam is safe and effective as a dental restorative material sunsetted after the 2023 House of Delegates.  AGD will continue to monitor scientific and regulatory developments regarding amalgam.
