On March 27, 2025, Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed a law to outlaw the addition of fluoride to public drinking water in the state. The legislation will take effect on May 7, 2025. Utah is the first state to enact such legislation, in a time when fluoride has come under increased criticism. Notably, on February 13, 2025, the Senate voted to confirm Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as HHS Secretary. He has previously expressed opposition to fluoride, stating that fluoride is “industrial waste” causing serious medical conditions and advising all U.S. water systems to remove fluoride from public water. The AGD submitted a letter to Governor Cox asking him to veto the bill.
