  • Prosthodontics Can different etching protocols change the properties of a hybrid ceramic?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of hydrofluoric acid (HF) and etching times on the flexural strength, roughness, wettability, and type of failure of a hybrid ceramic. Blocks of the ceramic material were randomly divided into 7 groups (n = 13): a control group (no treatment) as well as experimental groups etched with 5% or 10% HF for 30, 60, or 90 seconds. Biaxial flexural test results indicated a statistically significant reduction in the resistance of the ceramic when conditioned with 10% acid (P < 0.01). Surface analyses revealed that the higher the concentration of the acid, the lower the wettability of the ceramic (P < 0.01). Based on these results, a 5% HF concentration is best indicated for the surface treatment of VITA ENAMIC.

The vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) technique, a minimally invasive procedure, achieves multitooth recession coverage with a single access incision. The present case series aimed to provide information regarding the potential advantage of placing a chorionic membrane in combination with the VISTA technique to achieve recession coverage. The VISTA technique provided good results in terms of recession coverage. Although there was an improvement in the gingival biotype, the placement of a chorionic membrane did not provide any advantage in terms of percentage of root coverage.

A study of panoramic radiographs found that the tooth positions most frequently associated with proximity between the third molar and the mandibular canal were position C (highest point of the third molar located at or below the cervical margin of the second molar) and the mesioangular position (long axis of the third molar angled mesially toward the second molar). A proximity between the third molar and mandibular canal was found significantly more frequently in female patients and in patients aged 24 years and younger (P < 0.001).

Basic Science Bilateral presentation of different supernumerary teeth in nonsyndromic patients: case reports

    Anuj Jain
    Saumya Taneja

Bilateral occurrence of supernumerary teeth is rare. When supernumerary teeth do occur bilaterally, they are most often associated with a syndrome. This article presents case reports of 4 nonsyndromic patients with different forms of bilateral supernumerary teeth: mesiodentes, paramolars, distomolars, and parapremolars.

This study evaluated the degree of conversion of resin cements polymerized under 5 ceramic systems. The findings showed that RelyX ARC resin cement displayed a higher degree of conversion than Maxcem Elite. For both cements, the degree of conversion increased gradually up to 24 hours after curing. The ceramic system used directly influenced the degree of conversion of RelyX ARC but not of Maxcem Elite.

Erythema multiforme is an acute hypersensitivity reaction that affects the skin and/or mucosa. This report describes the rare case of an immunocompetent patient with erythema multiforme induced by fluconazole. The patient’s use of the antifungal medication was immediately discontinued, and the hypersensitivity reaction was treated successfully with a single intramuscular dose of betamethasone. A literature review of similar cases is presented to aid in the diagnosis of severe adverse reactions to fluconazole.

    Dinesh Rao
    Anupama Ramachandran
    Baskaran Veni Ashok

The present study aimed to record the difference in bite force between the dominant and nondominant chewing sides of patients with a chewing-side preference. The maximal voluntary bite force (MVBF) of 95 adults was recorded and compared in pairs (dominant vs nondominant side; men vs women; and age < 30 vs ≥ 30 years) with independent-samples t tests. The mean MVBF was significantly greater (P < 0.001) on the dominant chewing side than on the nondominant chewing side in both the male and female groups. The differences between the male and female dominant sides and between the male and female nondominant sides were also statistically significant (P < 0.001). However, there was no statistically significant difference in bite force between the age groups.

  • Basic Science Relationship of maxillary posterior roots to the maxillary sinus and cortical bone: a cone beam computed tomographic study

    Lívia Machado Lima Makris

    Paulo Sérgio dos Santos D’Addazio
    Carolina Oliveira de Lima

This study evaluated the relationship between the apices of maxillary posterior teeth (second premolar, first molar, and second molar) and the maxillary sinus floor (MSF) and maxillary cortical bone (MCB). Cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scanning was used to analyze 1660 roots from 678 teeth and determine the shortest distance between the root apex and MSF and between the root apex and buccal and palatal cortices of maxillary bone. The root apices were classified based on their relationship to the MSF: type 1, the root apex protruded into the maxillary sinus; type 2, the root apex was from 0 mm (touching the MSF) to 1 mm below the MSF; and type 3, the root apex was greater than 1 mm below the MSF. As the age of the subjects increased (older than 40 years), there was a significantly greater proximity of the teeth to the MCB (P < 0.05) and less proximity of second molars to the MSF (P = 0.005). First and second molars each presented a high prevalence of root apices that protruded into the maxillary sinus (type 1), 47.8% and 43.8%, respectively. Second premolars were more frequently classified as type 3 (71.7%) than first and second molars. The mesiobuccal root of the maxillary second molar was the root closest to the MSF, while the maxillary first molar was the tooth closest to the MCB.
