The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that George Schmidt, DMD, FAGD, will be installed as the newly elected vice president during the AGD’s Annual Meeting on November 24, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. Schmidt is passionate about dental education; he is currently chair of the AGD Scientific Meetings Council and host of the AGD Podcast Series, and previously served as chair of the AGD Dental Education Council.

“AGD prides itself on being a group of like-minded professionals who strive to be the best we can be,” said Schmidt. “This mindset fosters a sense of camaraderie deeply woven into the fabric of our culture and organization. Yet organizations like ours cannot ignore the challenges we face in membership and the evolving needs of our profession. It’s not enough to justify this as a generational dilemma. We should influence, underscore and promote the value of all we do and promote less traditional ways to participate. The road ahead is not without challenges. However, I know our future is bright and I look forward to working with our leaders and members.”

Schmidt has been a general dentist in Hanover Township, New Jersey, since 1998. He attended Fairleigh Dickinson University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Biology. He received his dental degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

While in graduate school, Schmidt received numerous academic and patient care awards. In addition, he was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Society, which admits only a select few graduates from each dental school. Those admitted must be at or near the top of their class and meet stringent admission requirements. In addition, Schmidt served as class president and was later elected to the position of president of the entire student body, which numbered over 400.

As a post-graduate, Schmidt completed a three-year continuum in the surgical placement of dental implants at the New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry and then remained on staff as a clinical associate for an additional year. While at NYU his studies included advanced bone grafting techniques as well as state of the art computer guided implant surgery. He has been awarded fellowship status in the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

In addition to private practice Schmidt has taught dentistry at two local universities. He is an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the CDE Implant department at NYU College of Dentistry where he is the co-surgical director and teaches other dentists how to surgically place and restore dental implants, and has also held the position of Clinical Assistant professor at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. He is passionate about dental education, and lectures nationally on dental implants, restorative dentistry, and practice management.
