Maya Morad-2“Participating in the Academy of General Dentistry’s House of Delegates was one of the most enriching dental experiences I’ve had to date. Each day brought unique opportunities to engage with established dental professionals, to shape policy discussions, and to contribute meaningfully to the future of general dentistry by voting on important policies impacting the field we have all dedicated ourselves to.
The meeting was three days total, with each day bringing a different experience. The weekend began with registration and the first session, where new delegates were introduced to the structure and purpose of the HOD. It was an excellent opportunity to meet other like-minded and passionate individuals and to learn the nuances of parliamentary procedures. On the second day, the agenda shifted to an early town hall and to breakout sessions, where policies were discussed within each caucus to help guide our thoughts while voting as individuals the following day. I was given the opportunity to contribute to discussions on policy proposals that directly impact the future of dentistry. It was humbling to see how everyone’s voice was equally valued in these deliberations. On the final day, we voted on policies, and we witnessed firsthand how debates culminated in actionable resolutions. It was a powerful reminder of the influence and responsibility we have as dental professionals to advocate for our field and our patients. It was truly an exciting and unique experience to find myself a part of, especially as I was given the opportunity to adjourn the final meeting, an experience I will never forget.

This opportunity went beyond professional development—it fostered a sense of community and purpose. Connecting with mentors, learning about the AGD’s advocacy efforts and contributing to decisions that affect the future of dentistry gave me a newfound appreciation for organized dentistry. My advice for future applicants is, if given this opportunity, to accept it even if it feels out of your comfort zone. There are so many individuals willing to guide you through the process, and it truly is a one-of-a-kind experience to get as a student. I would also say that if you find yourself at the next HOD session, take the chance to build relationships with the seasoned professionals surrounding you, as these connections are invaluable for personal growth and development in your profession. Lastly, you don’t need extensive leadership experience to succeed as a student delegate, just a passion for general dentistry and a willingness to learn, so embrace that!

To any dental student considering applying, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take this step. It’s an unparalleled opportunity to develop as a leader, advocate for our profession and grow within an inspiring community of dental professionals.”
