AGD Signs Letter in Support of the Dental Faculty Loan Repayment Assistance Ac
On April 2, 2024, AGD and other oral health advocacy organizations sent a letter to House Energy & Commerce and House Ways & Means Committee leadership in support of H.R.7814, the Dental Faculty Loan Repayment Assistance Act. The bill would permit “full-time faculty members participating in the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Dental Faculty Loan Repayment Program (DFLRP) to exclude from income the amount of their loan forgiveness from their federal income taxes.” The DFLRP was initially created to assist academic dental institutions in recruiting and retaining qualified faculty, which is a challenge partially due to overwhelming student loan debt.

Impact on General Dentistry: AGD is proud to support this critical legislation which would promote academic dental institutions’ recruitment and retention efforts. Qualified faculty is critical to train and maintain a strong and lasting dental workforce. This legislation would reduce the burden of dental student loans and help alleviate the dental workforce shortage.
