Dental Coalition Urges Support for PREVENT HPV Cancers Act
AGD signed on to an Organized Dentistry Coalition (ODC) letter that was sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in support of H.R.1550, the Promoting Resources to Expand Vaccination, Education and New Treatments for (PREVENT) HPV Cancers Act. The letter called for the PREVENT HPV Cancers Act to be brought to the House floor for a vote and communicated the ODC’s strong support for the legislation.
H.R.1550 is bipartisan legislation that would increase funding at the National Cancer Institute to focus research on HPV-associated cancers. The bill’s provisions would help promote public awareness of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines, which can prevent HPV and cancers associated with HPV.
AGD and the AGD Foundation sent letters to Congress in support of the legislation earlier in August.
Impact on General Dentistry: AGD strongly supports this legislation is advocating for its passage because general dentists are the first line of defense against oral cancer. The disease can be detected in its early stages during routine dental visits. AGD hopes that the dental community’s broad support for H.R.1550 will help it be advanced in Congress shortly.
