Testing the Tools: Spotlight on Bonding Agents
Each issue of AGD Impact features a Testing the Tools column with practical reviews of some of the latest dental products. This month, reviewer Ross Isbell, DMD, MBA, a general dentist in Gadsden, Alabama, tested bonding agents.
A Great Substitute for Glass Ionomers
Surefil One™
Dentsply Sirona

Surefil One™ is a new product from Dentsply Sirona meant to function as the best version of a glass ionomer with fluoride-releasing capabilities and reportedly less than 1% postoperative sensitivity. With its self-adhesive properties, this is a restoration type that could potentially be coded as a preventive restoration, but, due to its potential bond strength and longevity, may be something that stays in service for years before needing to be converted to a “permanent” filling. This is a great substitute for glass ionomers and bulk fill materials.
My New Primary Pulp Cap
FIT SA™
Shofu

Flowable composites have become widely versatile in their application, and Shofu is taking it even further. Its new FIT SA™ product is not only bioactive with the company’s proprietary Giomer system for remineralization activity, but it also can function without an etching or bonding agent. I am more than a year out with some FIT SA cases and am still seeing no sign of weakness or symptom recurrence. You could use this as a tool to reduce your armamentarium by combining your pulp cap and flowable materials, but I would at least advise to try it for special situations.
