Because recommendations for prophylactic antibiotic therapy have implications for both the health of individual patients and antibiotic stewardship, a literature review was performed to examine the evidence on indications and regimens for antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing surgical removal of impacted third molars, the most common procedure performed in outpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery.
