Speaker Biography
JoAnn R. Gurenlian, RDH, PhD, has a Bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Master’s degree in dental hygiene from Columbia University, and a Doctoral degree specializing in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Gurenlian has been active in dental hygiene for over 30 years having served as a former chairperson of the Department of Dental Hygiene at Thomas Jefferson University and former President of the ADHA. Presently, she is an entrepreneur offering consulting and continuing education services to health care professionals. She has experience as a clinician, educator, administrator, and researcher.

Dr. Gurenlian served as author of the Dental Hygiene Diagnosis and Oral Medicine column for Access. She is the coauthor of the text Preventing Medical Emergencies: Use of the Medical History, has published over 120 papers, and conducted over 400 presentations. Dr. Gurenlian served as chair of the Advisory Committee on the Future of Dental Hygiene, and coauthored the report “Dental Hygiene: Focus on Advancing the Profession. Dr. Gurenlian presently serves as Vice President of the International Federation of Dental Hygiene, and served as Chair of the Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry, and Dental Professionals Workgroup (PPOD) of the National Diabetes Education Program. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Alfred C. Fones Award, Irene Newman Award, ADHA/Warner Lambert Award for Excellence, and the ADHA Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Gurenlian is an internationally recognized speaker who addresses topics related to the dental hygiene process of care, oral pathology, oral medicine, diabetes, women’s health, women’s cancers, and leadership and professional development.

Course Descriptions

Oral Medicine: Linking Systemic Diseases with Oral Health Care

Given advances in medical practice and an aging population, a greater number of our everyday clients are medically compromised. Staying current with medical protocols, medications used for treatment, and oral management can be overwhelming. Nevertheless, an in-depth understanding of our clients’ diseases is essential if we are to provide effective treatment and prevent complications. This course is designed to highlight diseases of specific systems (i.e. respiratory, endocrine, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal systems, etc.) and their respective oral manifestations and considerations. Guidelines for providing oral health care including assessment, medical consultation, and treatment planning will be addressed.

Providing Care for Women with Cancer: An Update on Breast and Ovarian Cancers for the Dental Hygienist

More than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and over 25,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year. These individuals face challenges as they proceed through the continuum of care, and require support of all health care providers from the time of diagnosis through treatment and after treatment is completed. The purpose of this course is to update the dental hygienist with information about breast and ovarian cancer diagnosis, treatment modalities and the effects of treatment on the oral health of the patient. Come hear experiences about cancer survivors and activists.This course has one speaker, but time is allotted for personal experiences of the audience to be shared, and will be completed in a three to four hour time frame.
