Speaker Biography Dr. Maria Emanuel Ryan, a 1989 Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine graduate, is a tenured full Professor in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology at the School of Dental Medicine and a member of the Medical Staff at University Hospital at Stony Brook University Medical Center. She also serves as the Associate Dean for Strategic Planning and External Affairs as well as the Director of Clinical Research. Dr. Ryan received her specialty training in periodontics at the University of Connecticut Health Center, and her Ph.D in Oral Biology and Pathology at Stony Brook. Dr. Ryan is actively involved in teaching, practice and research at the School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Ryan serves on several scientific, dental and medical advisory boards. In 1996 Dr. Ryan was the recipient of the New Dentist Leadership Award from the Dental Society of the State of New York. In addition she received an achievement award from the American Dental Association in 1997, followed by induction into the Long Island Academy of Odontology in 1999 and the honor society Omicron Kappa Upsilon in 2003. Dr. Ryan is currently a Fellow of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine. She is a nationally and internationally known speaker and author and has published over 75 original scholarly works. Dr. Ryan’s research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, private foundations and industrial sources. She holds several U.S. patents based on her work at the University. Dr. Ryan lectures frequently and has appeared on CNN, Americas Health Network, NBC, CNBC, ABC and NPR to discuss newly emerging therapeutics, the connections between oral and systemic health and the need for early detection of periodontal disease and oral cancer. She has been an invited speaker at the Centers for Disease Control, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Periodontology, the National Periodontal Disease Coalition of Oral Health in America and the National Institutes of Health to discuss the role of the dental professional in the provision of optimal overall health care, with a special emphasis on issues specific to the management of diabetes. Dr. Ryan is the Immediate Past President of the Stony Brook University Alumni Association. She is currently serving on the Presidential Search Committee for Stony Brook University. She also serves as a member of The Science Advisory Council at Barnard College, Columbia University where she received her bachelor’s degree. Dr. Ryan resides in Laurel Hollow, New York with her husband Dr. Charles Ryan and their son Peter. Course Descriptions Title: What’s New With Locally Applied Antimicrobials? Length: 3 Hours Synopsis: Exciting advances in pharmacotherapeutics have given the practitioner a wide array of treatment options for the improved management of periodontal disease. The importance of risk assessment and accurate diagnosis in treatment planning will be discussed. The emphasis will be on non-surgical mechanical therapy and adjunctive uses for locally administered antimicrobials. The question arises, however, as to “when”, “why”, and “how” these new therapies are incorporated into our clinical practices, as well as “what results can be expected in our patients?” The participants will be brought up to date on locally applied antimicrobials (Atridox, Perio Chip and Arestin). The systemic impact of local therapy will be discussed. Title: Clinical Applications for Host Modulatory Therapy Length: 3 Hours Synopsis: A short review of host response mechanisms in periodontal disease will be followed by the mechanisms of action and proof of principle of host modulatory therapies such as Sub-antimicrobial Dose Doxycycline (Periostat), Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (GEM 21), Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (INFUSE). A brief summary of the clinical trials leading to the development of Periostat® will be presented. A review of treatment strategies for managing periodontal disease will be followed by an in-depth discussion of Periostat case reports. Use of host modulatory therapy with Periostat in special patient populations such as smokers, diabetics, geriatrics and genetically susceptible patients will be discussed. Title: To Head Off Disease Start at the Top: Oral Systemic Connections in Diabetes, Cardiovascular & Respiratory Diseases Length: 3 Hours Synopsis: The era of Periodontal Medicine has been introduced to both medical and dental communities as well as the general population. This presentation will summarize the evidence relating periodontal disease to several systemic diseases including diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic heart disease and stroke as well as respiratory infections. Special emphasis will be placed on the management of the diabetic patient. Treatment strategies that can positively impact the periodontal condition in patients with these conditions and potentially improve on systemic health will be discussed based on published studies and case presentations. Special considerations in the dental management of these higher risk patients will be emphasized. 21st Century Treatment Planning and Therapeutics for the Management of Periodontal Disease Length: 3 Hours Synopsis: Major advances that have been made in our basic understanding of periodontal diseases. The importance of risk assessment and accurate diagnosis in treatment planning will be discussed. Risk reduction strategies will be presented. Exciting advances in the field have given the practitioner a wide array of treatment options for the improved management of periodontal disease. The emphasis will be on non-surgical mechanical therapy, adjunctive uses of mouth rinses, irrigation and pharmocotherapeutics. The participant will be brought up-to-date on the use of systemically and locally administered antimicrobials and host modulatory agents. Special Considerations for the Dental Professional in Managing Patients with Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Length: 3 Hours Synopsis: Periodontal Medicine is developing as a discipline that has been introduced to both the medical and dental communities as well as the general population. This presentation will summarize the evidence relating periodontal disease to diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic heart disease and stroke. Treatment strategies that can positively impact the periodontal condition in patients with diabetes and heart disease and potentially improve on systemic health will be discussed based on published studies and case presentations.
